Facebook told me it was Earth Day today. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have known. But really, Earth Day should be every day!
Especially in my neighborhood in Brooklyn, sidewalk trash cans are always overflowing and you see trash on the streets everywhere. Meanwhile, there are no trash cans on the J subway platforms, but there are signs saying "Trash is a problem. Be part of the solution." The MTA wants you to take your trash with you, but realistically what happens is that no trash cans = trash all over everywhere else on the street. The average New Yorker is always in a rush and carrying a bunch of stuff everywhere, and I've seen countless people just leave their trash on the platform seats. I have a hard time believing, as the MTA claims, that there is less of a rodent problem too... trash being in bins contains the problem, but trash strewn everywhere leaves it wide open to more vermin. Trash IS a problem, MTA, so get some freakin' trash cans!
